Dr. Kate Scott is a developmental psychologist who is an expert in the fields of special education/learning disabilities and adult development. Kate is a talented educator and diagnostician. Early in her career, Kate taught and held administrative positions in schools specifically designed for students with language-based learning disabilities, such as the Landmark School, and the Churchill School in St. Louis. While in the master’s degree program in Reading and Language at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE), Kate participated in a year-long internship with a speech language pathologist/reading specialist in the Learning Disabilities Clinic at Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CHMC) where she conducted sophisticated reading/language evaluations and participated on an interdisciplinary clinical team.

Upon graduation, Kate worked at various Boston area hospital clinics (Franciscan Children’s Hospital, Tufts New England Medical Center, School Function Clinic at CHMC) as a reading/language clinician. Kate received additional clinical training by clinical neuropsychologists at the Neuropsychological Assessment Center at the North Shore Medical Center where she conducted comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations. In the 1990s, Kate pursued further education in the area of human development and psychology—she completed a second master’s degree in Counseling Processes and a doctoral degree in Human Development and Psychology—both from HGSE. While completing her doctorate, Kate served as Co-chairperson of the Harvard Educational Review, and she served as a Teaching Fellow for six years in classes focused on adult development, and developmental psychology. In her dissertation research, Kate sought to better understand how parents of learning disabled children made sense of their parenting experiences, and how they might be better supported. The results of her research revealed that the potential challenges associated with parenting a learning-disabled child might, with the appropriate supports, be a rich opportunity for personal growth and development. Kate is in the process of writing a book based upon her dissertation research.

For thirty years, Kate has had a private practice in which she conducts psychoeducational evaluations, consults with parents, advocates for students in schools, and provides one-to-one educational therapy for children, adolescents, and adults. Most recently, Kate has become certified as an Immunity to Change (ITC) coach by Minds at Work, a consulting firm that focuses on supporting individuals, teams, or organizations as a whole in their efforts to bring about change that has been previously difficult to achieve (e.g., New Year’s resolutions, direct communication among teams). Kate participates on teaching teams for two on-line courses that are each focused on supporting the growth and development of its participants using the ITC process: 1) “The Change Course,” offered by Minds at Work and 2) “Developing Myself” offered in the Certificate in Advanced Education Leadership program at HGSE. In addition, drawing upon her expertise in adult development and the ITC process, Kate offers support to parents; she offers one-to-one parent coaching, and on-line parent support groups.

Kate is excited to be a part of the Frankenberger Associates Team! She has offices in Branford, CT and in Cambridge, MA.
